Taylor Leslie- Completing an Internship
This past summer I completed an my incredible internship at Johns Hopkins Hospital. It was an experience I will carry with me for years to come. Over the summer, I was immersed in the world of healthcare finance, a field I was previously unfamiliar with. This internship pushed me to step outside of my comfort zone and explore new interests.
Throughout the summer, I had the chance to work on several projects. I investigated the rising costs associated with organ transplants, created a comprehensive grant database, and supported a data reconciliation initiative. These experiences deepened my understanding of hospital finance, and also sharpened my data analysis, investigative, and communication skills.
One of the highlights of my internship was the opportunity to explore various behind-the-scene aspects of hospital operations. I attended the "Operations Bootcamp" hosted by the administrative fellowship program, where I learned from leaders across different departments about what it takes to run a major healthcare system. I also had a chance to tour the tow line, linen system, and nutrition services department. Those areas are often overlooked, but absolutely essential to hospital functioning. Additionally, I spent time with the Quality Improvement team, where I learned about ongoing initiatives to improve processes and patient care across the hospital.
