Sydney Acie - Organized and hosted a school event (+6points)
I hosted and event along side with my Line sisters called “Price Tag,” which focused on the issue of mass layoffs across industries and how they have disproportionately impacted Black women. The event was an interactive discussion designed for Spelman students to explore the economic and social effects of these layoffs on careers, communities, and generational wealth. It was organized by the Ladies of the Eta Kappa Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., and created a space for participants to unpack challenges, share perspectives, and co-create actionable strategies for career readiness, financial strength, and advocacy.
Hosting this event was an incredibly meaningful experience for me. I felt proud to create a space where students could engage in open and honest conversations about how systemic issues like layoffs and inequality uniquely affect Black women. It was powerful to see everyone come together to learn, reflect, and support one another. What I found most interesting was how personal the discussion became—many participants connected their own experiences to the broader economic themes we discussed. It made the conversation feel real and urgent. The most challenging part was facilitating such a sensitive topic; I had to find the right balance between maintaining structure and allowing space for emotions and personal stories. Even though it was challenging, it helped me grow as a leader and improved my skills in communication, empathy, and organization.
This event also connected closely to my economics and sociology coursework, particularly in understanding how labor markets, inequality, and wealth distribution intersect with race and gender.
