Summer Health Professions Education Program w/ Columbia University- Class of 2027- Complete an internship (+5 points)
This summer, I had the opportunity to intern at Columbia University's dental school for a 6-week hybrid program. While at SHPEP, I worked with current dental students and gained hands-on experience, such as drilling, impressions, and learning about dental terminology. I engaged in career development workshops that allowed me to refine my resume and learn how to make my personal statement more compelling to a committee. Although I am focused primarily on dentistry, I gained exposure to other medical fields and what they offer, broadening my understanding of what medicine has to offer. I engaged in conversations exploring how, as upcoming medical professionals, we could be more empathetic and relatable to patients.
Going into the dental field can pose some financial barriers that could keep students from pursuing their desired career. This program helped to inform my peers and me about how we can fund our higher education and what the timeline would look like if we had to pay back loans. With the current presidential administration, loans for graduate school are being removed, and it is essential to know what steps students should take and be informed about what options are available to them when wanting to pursue higher education. Being a part of a cohort of talented students reminded me of the community in the Githii Honors Program. I am grateful for the opportunity to visit such a prestigious school and engage with professionals who will help me reach my future goals.
