Summer Cosmetic Formulation R&D Internship (Class of 2027) (5 points)
Reflection
This past summer, I had the opportunity to study the complex and inventive field of cosmetic formulation while working as an R&D intern at Cobalt Labs. My passion for cosmetic chemistry and my overall goal of creating inclusive and practical formulations for all skin types and colors were met with Cobalt Labs’ mission to combine scientific creativity and technology in the development of superior personal care products. I assisted in researching and developing new ideas for customers, as well as refining existing formulations, during the summer. Identifying and testing raw materials, compounding batches, performing stability tests, and keeping accurate lab records were all part of my duties. One of the particular reasons I enjoyed this internship is that it allowed me to dive deep into textured areas. They encouraged me to research deeper into the topic.
From this experience, I took many things with me. During this time, I learned the importance of perseverance, originality, and accuracy in formulation science. Every ingredient has a specific role and relationship, and even minor changes can have a profound impact on a product’s texture, effectiveness, or stability. This compelled me to think critically about solving problems in a laboratory setting, including how to troubleshoot errors, share findings with my co-workers, and pivot when formulas didn’t perform as expected. It expanded my knowledge of the effect chemistry has on customer experience and product performance. This internship made a significant contribution to both my intellectual and personal growth.
Along with improving my technical proficiency in formulation, stability testing, and data analysis, I also gained confidence in my ability to convey scientific information to others clearly. I discovered that I work best in dynamic, hands-on settings where creativity and teamwork are combined. Most significantly, research and development align with my strengths, enabling me to balance my passion for creativity and experimentation with my analytical perspective.
There are many applications for what I learnt at Cobalt Labs outside of the lab. My appreciation for how chemistry affects daily life has grown as a result of learning formulation science, which has also equipped me with the valuable skills I need to tackle real-world product development issues. Whether it’s creating a more sustainable product line or enhancing the efficacy of a skincare formula, this experience has shown me that significant innovation begins with precision, curiosity, and teamwork. In addition to reaffirming my love for cosmetic chemistry, my time at Cobalt Labs strengthened my resolve to create goods that honor individuality, science, and diversity.
