Sarah Lokenauth (Class of 2027) - Dr. Bharadwaj's Talk on "Statistical Discrimination and the Distribution of Wages"

Literary and Intellectual events: Attending Economics Talk

On September 15th, 2025, I attended an economics talk held by Dr.Bharadwaj on the topic of "Statistical Discrimination & Wages". This opportunity to hear about his research felt like an incredible opportunity to hear about how economics can be used to bring about economic justice. Dr.Bharadwaj also made the paper very accessible in the presentation and easy-to-understand. As someone who wants to go further into economics and social justice research, I really took notes and paid attention to the style of his presentation and how he went about explaining.

Reflecting on this experience I find that as a Spelman woman tasked with "the choice to change the world" I think it is interesting seeing how the field I am studying has the capacity to change the world. Furthermore, I feel that understanding how economics can work as a career has been very enlightening as I move towards considering graduate schools and what I want to do when I graduate in May 2027.

One weakness of the event is that it was during a busy class time, so not everyone could attend. Another weakness was that while it was an economics talk I feel like anyone could have benefited from the talk, and would have enjoyed seeing how social justice is explored in a research context.
