Samantha E. Johnson : Volunteer Work / Community Service (2-3 Points)
Last Saturday, through S.K.I.R.T.S. (Sisters Keeping It Real Through Service), I was able to participate in a community cleanup. This initiative, driven by Atlanta Good Shepherd Community Church, is hosted monthly as an event. For the cleanup, we were provided with trash bags and a tool for picking up trash. We were guided along a path that included picking up trash from under the freeway, the sides of streets, grassy areas, and the West End park. I enjoyed picking up trash and seeing the visible change we were making in our community, but I also appreciated being able to walk freely within it. Throughout the two hour service project, I filled up two trash bags of plastic, alcohol bottles, food containers and wrappers, discarded clothes, and bottle caps. Along our way, we also stopped by a Black run community garden and met the founder. This part was also another enjoyable part of the service, as I learned something new about my community. I loved completing this service, seeing the visible change we created, and finding new gems within our community.
