Recently, I signed up to participate in a study abroad program for the 2025-26 Wintermester semester. In hopes of financially participating in this program, I sought out scholarships that are available specifically for study abroad programs. One of the scholarships I became aware of was the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship, which is a competitive scholarship award that covers costs associated with international study abroad and internship programs. Through my research, I learned that the Gilman Scholarship has been operating for over two decades and has awarded over 44,000 scholarships to thousands of students, one of which being one of my friends here at Spelman College. She expressed to me her amazing experience studying abroad and mentioned how the Gilman Scholarship made it possible for her to participate in it. After gaining much knowledge about this very resourceful financial award, I chose to apply for the Gilman Scholarship this past October 2025 entry deadline. I realized that resources like these help make it possible for students to pursue their dreams all over the globe. I am thankful that access to opportunities overseas is being expanded through many foundations and organizations eagerly funding these opportunities worldwide.
Consequently, I am staying hopeful and prayerful for receiving the Gilman Scholarship to fund my Guangzhou, China study abroad experience. Becoming knowledgeable of this scholarship award has changed my perspective on the millions of opportunities that are accessible to me. I used to believe that I was limited to only academic and professional opportunities here in the United States due to not being able to financially afford certain opportunities overseas. Yet, I now know that I am able to obtain every goal in mind with the help of foundations and organizations like the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Award. The world has infinite experiences and pathways that I am eagerly waiting to reach.
