Research and Scholarship: Presenting Case Study Research (6 points)

 

During my summer internship, I presented a comprehensive case study and informational research paper on Addison's disease, an endocrine disorder characterized by under-stimulation of the adrenal glands. Because funding cuts due to DEI issues prevented me and my cohort from completing lab work, independent case study research was presented as a worthwhile alternative. My goal in presenting this disease was to highlight the many pathways that can lead to the development of this rare disorder and demonstrate holistic care in disease diagnosis.

I found this activity especially engaging because we were encouraged to reference information we learned in lecture to develop the medical histories behind our simulated patients. Even on the day we presented our cases, our professor encouraged current medical students to sit in, and they challenged us with questions about our rationale behind possible treatments. This exercise helped me anticipate the kind of critical thinking that is expected of medical students, especially during clinical rotations where these skills are needed the most.
