Preparing for and taking a Professional Certification Exam -- 6 PTS
Over the summer, I began conducting LSAT study methodology research and began understanding the basics of the logistical reasoning section. This preparation has extended into the school year, dedicating 7 hours a week to self-paced learning and drills online and in the LSAT TRAINER textbook. The strengths of this event start with allowing myself to begin absorbing information, such as essential vocabulary words, and the ability to break down arguments. Another strength that arose from beginning LSAT studying and research early is the unexpected preparation it provided for my Constitutional Law course! I can identify keywords that reveal a Supreme Court judge's argument and dissect their dissent in full. One of the weaknesses of this activity would be retention. It became increasingly more difficult to retain information at the rate at which I was receiving it, so I opted to slow down my preparation to increase comprehension of the material.
This experience definitely connects to other knowledge I've gained in the realm of political science and pre-law. During my matriculation, I have conducted research on the Prison-Industrial Complex, the United Nations Autonomous Weapons policy, clerked in a local courthouse, and interned for the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation. While I'm continuously seeking opportunities to enhance my pre-law journey, starting my LSAT preparation journey is the first step into life outside of Spelman College's gates. The tools that I've gained from LSAT preparation have also supported me during my Constitutional Law coursework, as stated above.
Finally, this experience has influenced my goals and aspirations by allowing me to take tangible steps to become a J.D. candidate in the next 2 years. I'm eager to use the tools that Spelman has provided me through coursework, internship experience, and work opportunities. The next steps to build on this experience are to continue my pace in preparation work, register for an in-person Kaplan study course for the Spring, and register for the June LSAT. With these combined experiences, I can begin forming my law school application package by my senior year at Spelman.
