Participating in a Performing Arts or Ensemble (6 points) - Class of 2028
Playing bassoon in the Atlanta University Center Symphony Orchestra (AUCSO) has been one of the most enriching parts of my college experience. As a returning musician, I’ve learned how much discipline, collaboration, and emotional intelligence are required to perform at a high level while balancing an academically rigorous schedule. Each rehearsal and personal practice session pushes me to engage both intellectually and artistically, interpreting complex scores while also adapting to the ensemble’s dynamics. The orchestra brings together students from across the AUC, allowing me to connect with peers from Clark Atlanta University, Morehouse College, and even outside professional musicians through a shared love of music and cultural expression.
From a critical standpoint, one of the greatest strengths of this experience is the community it fosters—musicians encouraging one another through technical and emotional challenges. Our conductor’s emphasis on unity and precision has improved my tone control and sight-reading under pressure. However, balancing late rehearsals with research and coursework can be challenging. I’ve had to refine my time management and learn when to prioritize rest so that music remains a source of inspiration rather than stress. This taught me the importance of maintaining balance and discipline, which are lessons that carry far beyond the stage.
I see direct connections between performing in AUCSO and my academic studies. Both require listening, coordination, and an awareness of systems—whether neural or musical—that function best through harmony. Performing classical works rooted in cultural history deepened my appreciation for how art preserves collective memory and emotion, complementing my scientific work on the brain and human expression.
The impact of this experience extends beyond performance. Music has been, and continues to be, a way for me to express emotion, manage stress, and cultivate mindfulness amidst a demanding academic path. As I continue through AUCSO, I plan to mentor new members and explore performances that blend art and advocacy, using music as both therapy and testimony.
