Leadership Role in an Academic Organization (Class of 2027) (3 points)
Reflection
I serve as the Co-Community Service Chair for the Spelman College Chemistry Club. Serving as Co-Chair has enabled me to combine my passion for community impact with my love of chemistry. The main thing I have taken from this experience so far is that science is a powerful tool for service. Organizing community events that introduce young learners to chemistry has shown me that learning doesn’t only happen in the lab; it can also encourage confidence and curiosity in others. Serving as Co-chair has prompted me to think critically about the lack of accessibility to STEM in underfunded communities. I have begun to think more about how I can do my part to make scientific learning inclusive and engaging.
Through this role, I developed more decisive leadership, organization, and communication skills. I learned that I thrive in collaborative spaces where I can plan initiatives and see them come to life through teamwork. Personally, I also grew more confident in public speaking and in representing the Chemistry Club’s mission to serve through science.
I can apply what I’ve learned to real-world situations by continuing to bridge chemistry and community engagement. Whether it’s creating programs that make STEM more accessible to underrepresented students or utilizing my future career in cosmetic chemistry to promote science education, this experience has taught me that true leadership lies in leveraging knowledge to uplift others.
