Morehouse School of Medicine First Look Event(Attending a general interest conference or workshop: 3 points) - Mallory Wallace

I had the privilege of attending the Morehouse School of Medicine 'First Look' event, an immersive experience for pre-health students to become familiar with the pathway to healthcare. As a future medical school applicant, I found this event to be very helpful in providing resources, connections, and meaningful advice to pre-med students. At this event, I was able to make lasting connections with some of the physicians present, and even gained insight on shadowing/internship opportunities. Through this, I learned that one of the most valuable resources a pre-medical student can have is a mentor, and it prompted me to start building my network with physicians in places I strive to be in. Overall, this experience offered me the chance to learn a lot about Morehouse School of Medicine, as well as guidelines for being a exceptional medical school applicant.

Throughout the event, I was with the orthopedics group with my guide who was a 4th year medical student at Morehouse School of Medicine. He led us through a series of sessions that each taught us valuable skills, such as intubation, suturing, histology, and healthcare ethics. We also had the opportunity to attend a 'black women in medicine' panel with medical students, residents, and established physicians. This was my favorite part of the event as we were able to internalize the various pathways each of the women took to reach their desired end goal of becoming physicians. This panel reminded me that the path to medicine is not always linear. Obstacles, set backs, and challenges will present themselves but it is up to me to adapt and persevere in the midst of adversity.

Additionally, we attended an MCAT Prep session that allowed us to analyze mock MCAT questions and utilize useful techniques to reach a final answer. I learned that the MCAT requires much more than coursework knowledge, but also test taking techniques, time management, and most importantly, confidence. We also learned about the best times to take the MCAT, as well as appropriate scores for a successful med school applicant. This helped me set a goal score and also begin my prep for the MCAT.

Overall, this event was a wonderful experience that gave me many resources to prepare myself for medical school. The inspiring testimonies and helpful tips from practicing physicians and medical students really helped me establish a newfound sense of confidence within myself to apply and start my medical school journey. It served as one of my reminders to keep pushing forward.
