LEADERSHIP ROLE IN AN ACADEMIC ORGANIZATION (3 POINTS) - (ALI ASKEW CLASS OF 2028)

After months of applications and interviewing, I have become a resident advisor for Spelman College’s Office of Housing and Residence Life. I work with an amazing, supportive team of resident advisors and directors through Spelman who allow me to be my authentic self. I am a member of Area 2, which covers Howard-Herald Hall, Dorothy Shephard Manley Hall, Bessie Strong Hall, and MacVicar Hall.

As a resident advisor, I play a “big sister” role to the freshmen who are new to the college environment and help them navigate new or challenging experiences if they come to me in need of guidance. I use my leadership role to create a safe environment and supportive community within my hall. Before starting the school year, I was worried that I would be too overwhelmed and mess up. Thankfully, I work with new and returning resident advisors who allowed me to make mistakes and helped me get back on my feet when I felt down. I love being an RA because I get to provide the guidance that I wish I had last year as a freshman. I am extremely grateful for my role as a resident advisor.
