Kinsley Wilson - Completed a summer internship (+5 points)
This past summer, I had the honor of participating in the ThinkNeuro, LLC virtual research program. I had hands-on research experience that deepened my understanding of data analysis and public health. I was introduced to R programming, which I used to manage, analyze, and visualize healthcare disparities data. Through guidance and independent effort, I learned how to code effectively, clean data, and interpret statistical outputs. It demonstrated to me how code can be used to reveal important trends within health data and assist in informing decision-making in healthcare that is based on evidence.
My research involved identifying and analyzing healthcare disparities among different groups of people, with a focus on how race, socioeconomic status, and location impact health outcomes. By leveraging R, I was able to graphically represent trends that highlighted clear inequalities in access to care and health services. Exposure to real-world data made me aware of the extent to which systemic problems impact community and individual health, and it solidified my commitment to a career focused on reducing such problems through research and practice.
Beyond the technical skill, the ThinkNeuros program improved my critical thinking as well as the ability to collaborate with other students who shared similar interests in neuroscience and public health. Describing results, interpreting data, and communicating my findings helped me grow as a researcher and as a communicator. The process taught me that science is not about numbers or code but about sharing a story with data that can impact change. It reminded me of my interest in applying quantitative research practices to promote health equity and enhance the well-being of marginalized communities.
