Honors Program Event: Black August - Kennedy Plummer 2027

Last month, I attended the Honors Program event, "Commemorating Black August", a discussion on Assata Shakur. This engaging event included a film preview, discussion, and conversation on the topic of Shakur and her life. Furthermore, Education professors and former black Panther were also included. Assata was a pillar of courage and fearlessness for those in the Black Panther Party, and that helped to guide our discussion. Some of the key take aways from this event are how important it is to have something worth fighting for. We should be engaged and that engagement should lead to passion. This event required me to challenge my thought process and consider what values I hold and how express and exercise those. I have had the experience to take the first year course on the Black Panther party, and grow up in the Bay Area, not far from Oakland, so this discussion was not only inspiring, but it also had familial connections too. Lastly, this discussion helped me to visualize the way that we are in a similar position to that of the panthers of the past, and we still have so much fighting to do if we will have a just world to live in.
