Founding Spelman’s Chapter of Alpha Psi Omega – Jordan Fischer
When I first arrived at Spelman, I was excited to find a space where theatre lovers could connect, create, and celebrate performance together. After looking around, I realized there wasn’t an existing theatre club on campus. What started as a simple idea, just wanting to build community through the arts, quickly grew into something much larger when I began the process of founding Spelman’s chapter of Alpha Psi Omega.
Seeing the organization take shape has been one of the most rewarding parts of my first semester. What began with a few interested students has grown into a group of over fifty members, all passionate about theatre in their own ways. We’ve secured a keyboard for rehearsals and are preparing for our first induction ceremony in November. Watching it all come together has taught me that leadership often begins with noticing what’s missing and being willing to build it yourself.
This experience has shown me the importance of collaboration, patience, and vision. It reminded me that creative spaces are essential to intellectual and emotional growth, and that when you open doors for others to express themselves, you also strengthen the larger community around you. More than anything, it has shown me how quickly ideas can become movements when shared with people who care.
