Finding Balance in Restorative Yoga

I had the honor of participating in a restorative yoga session led by Spelman class of 2022 Alumnae Aliya Brooks. Ms. Brooks created a calming and nurturing environment, helping us be more in tune with our minds and bodies, which students tend to ignore throughout the week.  I appreciated the variety in difficulty of the stretches Ms. Brooks encouraged us to attempt, as well as the difference between static and dynamic stretches that rejuvenated our bodies and spirits. Especially after enduring a full day of classes and planning for the week ahead, the class provided a welcome opportunity to pause and care for both mind and body. Additionally, I appreciated the insight gained from taking this class with a recent Spelman alumna. She advised us to enjoy every moment of our college experience to the fullest, as once we graduate, it may be difficult to return to the Spelman environment and contribute, which she  reflected on when sharing her own challenges in coming back to lead more yoga sessions. Ultimately, the session reminded me of the importance of slowing down, reconnecting with myself, and appreciating the supportive community that Spelman fosters.
