Exploring Biomedical Engineering with NSBE Jr. - 2029

3 points - Volunteer work related to career goals

I had the opportunity to volunteer this Saturday with the National Society of Black Engineering Jr., Atlanta University Center Chapter. During this meeting, I helped middle and high school students with designing prosthetics using 3D modeling software, TinkerCAD. We explored what biomedical engineering is, and what these engineers do within their discipline. The students each designed their own prosthetic, including arms, legs, and even eyeballs. I enjoyed helping them problem solve and answer any questions they had about biomedical engineering. Through this volunteer experience, I was able to apply knowledge gained from my Introduction to Engineering class, where I learned about the different types of engineering disciplines.

I want to pursue a career in Civil Engineering, however I plan to continue working with children throughout my career and exposing them to different STEM disciplines to increase the diversity in STEM careers. Overall, volunteering with NSBE Jr. allowed me to apply knowledge from my class, and gain experience for future career opportunities.
