Emory Labor Support Volunteer: First Birthing Experience

On September 18th, 2025, I was able to work on my first shift as a Labor Support Volunteer at Emory University Hospital Midtown. As an aspiring OB/GYN this program is an amazing opportunity to gain insight to my future career. The Labor Support Volunteering program provides hands-on, non-clinical experience in patient care, emotional support, and the realities of labor and delivery.

We are able to help patients through breathing exercises, provide aromatherapy, massages, and put them into different birthing positions to accelerate dilation.

Through caring for a patient, I assisted during my first vaginal birth. Standing beside a patient as she brought new life into the world was humbling and inspiring. It was confirmation that becoming an OB/GYN is my a part of my purpose. I witnessed the strength, vulnerability, and resilience that comes with childbirth and further deepened my commitment to supporting women in this capacity.

As I continue growing my experience in this program, I realize that the Habits of Mind are especially critical in this environment. Empathy is one that is very important in helping patients through the process of childbirth. Being able to support emotionally by offering comfort, reassurance, and advocacy for a patient going through that level of pain is synonymous with ethical practice and empathetic values.

This experience will stay with me throughout my journey of helping more women as an OB/GYN. As a future physician, I will continue to carry empathy as I grow in my skills.
