Cultural Expansion: Finding Art, Identity, and Global Connection in Milan
This summer, I had the incredible opportunity to spend time in Milan, Italy—a city that thrives at the intersection of history, fashion, and innovation. Known as the design capital of the world, Milan offered me more than just stunning architecture and style; it became a classroom without walls. From the cobblestone streets to the galleries and cathedrals, every corner of the city reflected centuries of creativity and resilience.
One of the most transformative moments of my trip was visiting the Duomo di Milano, the city’s breathtaking cathedral. Standing before its intricate spires and marble façade, I was struck by the patience and craftsmanship that went into creating something meant to last generations. It challenged me to think about the kind of work I want to create in my own life—work that carries intention, beauty, and meaning. Later, as I explored the Brera Art Gallery, I was drawn to how Italian artists represented emotion through color and form. Their art was not just about perfection, but about expression—something deeply human and universal.
On a personal level, being in Milan expanded how I see myself as both a learner and a global citizen. Navigating a new culture pushed me outside my comfort zone, from trying to communicate in Italian to learning how to adapt to a different pace of life. I discovered how much I value curiosity and openness—the willingness to learn from unfamiliar people and spaces. Traveling reminded me that growth often begins in discomfort, and that humility is essential to true understanding.
What I gained from this experience reaches far beyond travel memories. Milan deepened my appreciation for cultural exchange and artistic expression as tools for empathy and connection. It reminded me that the pursuit of knowledge is not limited to books or classrooms—it happens when we allow the world to teach us.
This journey reflects the mission of the Githii Honors Program: to cultivate scholars who are not only intellectually engaged but also globally conscious and culturally grounded. My time in Milan strengthened my commitment to using my education to bridge cultures and tell stories that connect us. As I continue my studies at Spelman, I hope to bring that same spirit of exploration and openness to my academic community—honoring both where I come from and the global perspectives that continue to shape who I am becoming.
