Comprehensive Writing Center Tutor for the Spelman Writing Center +3 (Kathya Lavado-Arrington, Class of 2028)
I am proud to announce that I have been selected to be a comprehensive writing center tutor for the Spelman Writing Center during the 2025-2026 school year. As a writing center tutor, my main goal is to be of assistance to Spelman students to help them with essays ranging from personal statements for a scholarship to academic essays for a class.
Through these first few months of being a tutor, I have learned so much about other students, as well as myself. I believe that tutoring is more than me giving a few “tips” to the other person on their writing, and that through the process, the other person and I are learning from each other. As I place my strong suit as a tutor in personal statements, I see a lot of background stories as well as about how others have been taught to write about themselves. In these sessions, I am so happy that I can help someone showcase their own voice in their essay.
I also come across many different types of students in the writing center, especially since there is a wide variety of majors and classifications that the students have. Being able to look at other students' writing allows me to make myself more aware of my writing habits, as well as look at how I can improve from their work. As a sophomore, at times I can feel that I am not qualified enough to help an individual who is older than me or has more experience at Spelman than me. However, each session reminds me that what ultimately matters is our willingness to work with each other. This perspective has truly allowed me to broaden my perspective in tutoring, and shows that I can grow as a student by simply listening. As I would love to go into a career in public affairs and journalism, all that I learn from being a writing center tutor, from critical thinking to the importance of placing emotion in my writing, reminds me of why my passion continues to stand.
