Completing an internship- 5 points
Last summer, I interned with the CBS Evening News in New York City, mainly working in Production with the broadcast associates! I helped find photo and video content for the News Roundup (quickfire headlines), in addition to gathering content restrictions and completing other tasks as assigned. I was also given the opportunity to assist on shoots and research and pitch my own stories, and received great feedback, allowing me to further understand the behind-the-scenes of broadcast journalism and what factors go into choosing a story, particularly pertaining to visual elements (which I don’t have to think about as a print journalist). I found this experience incredibly fun and exciting, as I had previously never done anything broadcast journalism-related and loved seeing the behind-the-scenes of the show. It was also challenging at times, as the tasks given were incredibly unfamiliar and sometimes overwhelming, but I felt well supported and learned a lot. I can definitely use my experiences and skills acquired in my Investigative Journalism course (sourcing, interviewing, etc.), as well as my role on the Spelman Blueprint. -by Nila Roper
