Completing an Internship (5 points)

Kellye Cleveland: Summer Internship: Shadowing Attorney Kenya Davis, Washington DC:

During my summer internship in D.C., shadowing Kenya Davis showed me what it truly means to lead with purpose in the legal field. Watching her balance strength and empathy in every situation challenged how I view justice and advocacy. I realized that being an effective lawyer isn’t just about arguing a case but about understanding the people behind it. The work she does on trafficking, labor violations, and abuse cases made me think deeper about how law connects to power, protection, and humanity. Sitting in strategy meetings and attending a federal hearing expanded my view of how much preparation, care, and courage it takes to handle complex cases that impact real lives.
This experience really pushed me to grow both personally and academically. Being in that environment made me more confident in my goals and in my ability to hold space in professional settings. I learned that I’m not just passionate about law as a concept, but about the role it plays in creating fairness and accountability. Observing Ms. Davis reminded me why I want to go into this field, to make a difference for people who don’t always have someone fighting for them.
Everything I learned in those two weeks will carry over into what I do next. I want to take the same focus, preparation, and intentionality I saw in Ms. Davis and apply it to my work, whether it’s in class, internships, or future advocacy. Her example reminded me that leadership and service go hand in hand. Moving forward, I’ll keep using the law and my education as tools to push for equity and justice, staying grounded in purpose no matter what room I’m in.
