Competing an Internship: SHPEP Program at Howard University (5 pts) - Endia Evans, (Class of 2028)
This Summer, I concluded an incredible 6-week journey as a SHPEP Medical Scholar at Howard University College of Medicine and Dentistry. This was a great opportunity to grow academically, clinically, and personally. Through immersive clinical exposure, professional development, and meaningful connections, I’ve gained so much insight into medicine, healthcare disparities, and what it truly means to serve with compassion and purpose. During my experience, I attended a Clinical Skills Workshop hosted by USUHS, learning skills such as tourniquet application, intubation, surgical suturing, and breathing tube insertion. I also shadowed an anesthesiologist, witnessing epidural insertion and observing compassionate care in the face of a language barrier. In pediatrics and NICU at Howard University Hospital, I learned about maternal-child health, newborn assessments, and labor & delivery observations. In our first two weeks virtually, I had a tele-simulation experience where I played the role of a physician, conducting patient interviews and learned to lead in real-time. I enjoyed learning topics such as cultural competency and healthcare equity within minority communities, and ultimately, the highlight of my experience, aside from medical engagement, was connecting with like-minded pre-health scholars from across the country, which truly enriched the experience and built a collective intellectual community.
