Research & Clinical Internship at Atrium Health Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (+5 pts), Class of 2027

Throughout the summer, I  had the distinct honor of serving as a research and clinical intern at Atrium Health within the Department of Oral Medicine and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Under the mentorship of Dr. Michael Brennan and Dr. Rachel Calloway, I led a research project titled “Delay in Radiation Treatment Due to Dental Extractions and Contributory Factors.” Our work explored how dental clearance protocols may impact timely access to radiation therapy for patients with head and neck cancer—an issue that aligns closely with my commitment to advancing oral health equity. To support my work, I completed CITI Certification training in research ethics and human subjects protection, ensuring that my contributions reflected both scientific integrity and equitable research practices. I was proud to present my findings at a department-wide research symposium, where I had the opportunity to share our data with clinicians, researchers, and healthcare leaders across the system.

In addition to my research, I served as a clinical intern at the Atrium Health Dental Clinic, where I gained hands-on experience shadowing General Practice Residency residents. These clinical encounters deepened my understanding of comprehensive care and strengthened my passion for addressing gaps in oral healthcare delivery.

One of the most memorable experiences of this summer was attending a private dinner with Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles, whose insights on leadership and service left a lasting impression.
I am deeply grateful for the many people I met and the meaningful relationships I built along the way. The guidance, encouragement, and wisdom I received have been invaluable to my academic and professional journey.

This entire experience was made possible by John W. Bluford, III, MBA, LFACHE through the Bluford Healthcare Leadership Institute. I’m sincerely thankful for the access, exposure, and mentorship that continue to shape my path in healthcare.
