Bailey Johnson - Organizing & Promoting Campus Events / Leadership Role in an Academic Organization - 3 Points
Serving as the Lead Publicity Chair for the Miss Spelman Advisory Board has been one of the most exciting opportunities of my time at Spelman. In this role, I’ve been able to blend creativity, organization, and community engagement to bring our campus events to life. One of the projects I’m most proud of was organizing Self Care & Sweat — a house music–themed cycling event hosted by the 1st Attendant to the 42nd Miss Spelman College, Chelsea Benton. The event was designed to encourage Spelman sisters to prioritize wellness while building friendship and sisterhood through movement and music.
As Lead Publicity Chair, I handled every element of the event’s promotion — from creating the graphics and social media campaign to generating excitement online and around campus. I curated a high-energy playlist to match the house music theme, coordinated with the cycling instructor, secured the location, and organized post-workout snacks for participants.
Planning Self Care & Sweat taught me how to balance logistics with creativity, ensuring that the event not only ran smoothly but also felt intentional and inspiring. It was rewarding to see Spelman students come together in such a positive space, celebrating both wellness and community.
This experience deepened my appreciation for thoughtful event planning and strategic communication. I learned that great publicity isn’t just about getting attention, it’s about creating an atmosphere that makes people want to show up and be part of something meaningful. I plan to take these lessons with me as I continue pursuing opportunities that combine creativity, wellness, and community building.
