ATTENDING PERFORMANCES (THEATER, MUSICAL, CONCERTS, OPERA, DANCE) (2 POINTS) - (MARY ELLA ALEXANDER CLASS OF 2028)

I attended the musical, Seussical, where the story followed Horton the Elephant as he discovers a speck of dust that contains a microscopic city called Whoville. Throughout the musical, he tries to protect the tiny Whos and advocate for them because "a person's a person no matter how small." During his journey, he comes along a bird named Mayzie and agrees to guard her egg, but he is put on trial for insanity for talking to a speck of dust. The Cat in the Hat guides Horton and the tiny people in Whoville as the story progresses and demonstrates themes of individuality, friendship, and loyalty. They also explore imagination, perserverance, and standing up for what you believe in regardless of what others say. Horton faced a lot of mockery for hearing voices on the speck of dust, but he stayed true to his beliefs and remained authentic rather than being a follwer. I really enjoyed this musical because it brought a fresh perspective on having that imagination because it is important to not let reality control you all the time and to bring creativity to one's life. There was also a character named Jojo who was seen as strange for his creativity, however this showed me that we should not look at people differently for having a different perspective on life because everyone is different. Altogether, Seussical showed themes of perserverance, courage, community, and empathy and brought a less rigid way of looking at life.
