Chelseaparis Henry- Attending documentary film screening (2PTS) and Attending Reclaimed: Beyond the Braid (2PTS)
On October 9th, I had the privilege of attending Reclaimed: Beyond the Braid, a documentary film screening for Rebundle's founding phase. This event was a partnership by Rebundle and Myavana as an effort to educate others on the alternatives to synthetic, harmful haircare. For context, Rebundle is the first plant-based hair braiding company in the United States and is founded by Ciara May; and Myavana is the first beauty technology company that provides consultations and suggestions about complex hair textures and is founded by Candace Mitchell Harris.
In regard to the documentary film screening, the main topic of the event was healthy and sustainable options for black hair care that are beneficial to our bodies and the environment. The film showcased how banana fibers are created into braiding hair/weave. I was so engaged, surprised, and inspired by the creator's ability to think outside the box for this new creation. Not only is this invention innovative and sustainable, it also promotes economic growth through partnerships with various African product suppliers and manufacturers. Lastly, I was most heartfelt to the fact that both companies (Rebundle and Myavana) are founded by black women, which gives way to an amazing sense of representation in the black hair care sector.
