Attended First Look at Morehouse School of Medicine

Attending the First Look at Morehouse School of Medicine was one of the most inspiring experiences I’ve had as a pre-med student. The day was filled with opportunities to network, engage in mock interviews, explore medical ethics, and gain an inside look at what it truly means to train as a future physician. From stepping into the cadaver lab for the first time to hearing from panels of medical students and professionals, I left the event feeling inspired for the future and supported by my growing community.

One of the major strengths of the First Look event was how interactive and immersive it was. Rather than just hearing about medical school, we were encouraged to think, participate, and ask questions. The mock interview and ethics sessions, for instance, pushed me to think critically and express my values under pressure, which are skills that are essential for both medical school and clinical practice. Meeting current medical students also gave me honest insight into the challenges and rewards of their journey.

However, like any event, there were areas for improvement. The schedule was packed, which made it difficult to engage deeply with every activity. I also wished there had been more one-on-one networking time with admissions representatives or physicians to ask specific questions about preparation and career paths. Still, these minor limitations didn’t overshadow how valuable and motivating the experience was overall.

This event connected directly to my broader journey in medicine. I have always been interested in exploring decision-making and empathy in healthcare. Visiting the cadaver lab also tied together my classroom learning in anatomy and physiology with real-world medical training, helping solidify the importance of my future role in helping advancements in science and compassionate care. I’m drawn to environments that challenge me intellectually while allowing me to connect deeply with people. This event reaffirmed that medicine can allow for both of these aspects to coexist.

The First Look at Morehouse School of Medicine gave me clarity about my future goals. I left feeling more confident that I belong in spaces dedicated to service, health equity, and compassionate care. The professionalism and purpose that each speaker demonstrated reminded me of the kind of doctor I aspire to be.  I plan to continue developing my interviewing and ethical reasoning skills, seek mentorship from physicians who share my interests, and explore programs focused on underserved communities.
