Academic Enrichment Reflection: Un-Hackathon for Ethical AI Innovation

Participating in the Un-Hackathon for Ethical AI Innovation in Nashville was a defining moment in my academic journey. Representing Spelman College alongside other brilliant students reminded me of how powerful collaboration and creativity can be when it’s rooted in purpose. This wasn’t the usual hackathon it was centered around ethics, problem solving, and innovation that truly matters. Our team worked together to reimagine how artificial intelligence could support communities instead of harm them, and it pushed me to think beyond coding and into real-world impact. Winning top honors at the event made me even more aware of how vital our voices are as young Black scholars in tech.

This experience strengthened my leadership and communication skills, but more importantly, it deepened my curiosity about how AI can shape the future responsibly. I learned that innovation isn’t just about technology it’s about intention, empathy, and inclusion. Being part of this experience helped me see how academic engagement can bridge knowledge and purpose, which aligns perfectly with what the Ethel Waddell Githii Honors Program represents.
