Academic Enrichment- Critical Thinking Workshop- A'Jah Canselo Class of 2029

On September 18, 2025, I participated in a critical thinking workshop hosted by Spelman Pathways. I signed up for this workshop in hopes of further developing my critical thinking skills, or to point out if I was not thinking as critically as I thought. The workshop explained what critical thinking was and how to avoid mistakes. The part that stuck with me the most about this experience was when we broke up into small groups to apply critical thinking to certain scenarios. It was eye-opening to see how differently everyone thinks. In each group, everyone had either different answers or the same answer, but with different reasoning. It showed me that thinking critically is not primarily about finding the correct answer, but instead about how one can examine a situation and reach a well-reasoned conclusion. Another aspect that I took away from the workshop was how to apply critical thinking in real-life situations. This allowed me to see how critical thinking directly links to the habits of mind. By listening carefully, considering other perspectives, and thinking flexibly, we can think critically and further our intellectual minds. Following this workshop, I have been thinking critically in numerous situations, so that it has become like second nature. By developing and expanding my critical thinking skills, I can cultivate and stabilize the habits of mind in my everyday life, thereby furthering my academic, professional, and personal relationships with others and achieving a successful matriculation through Spelman and beyond.
