Freedom Riders: A Journey With No End In Sight
On Tuesday September 30th I had the honor of attending a theatrical stage reading of Freedom Riders:A Journey With No End In Sight. The performance was a innovative piece that confronts the experiences of systematic oppression and violence Black men and women have faced throughout history, and continue to face today in America. Directed by Indira Etwaroo, the CEO and Artistic Director of Harlem Stage, and performed by a cast and crew of renowned actors, artist and musicians they beautifully conveyed the painful truths of being Black in America. Each monologue is based on a true lived experience, ending on the murder of Breonna Taylor in March 2020.
The name of the production is a homage to the Freedom Riders, who were civil rights activists that rode buses throughout the segregated south to challenge racist legislation. The tour was designed to stop in major cities that the freedom riders also traveled too. The production was a wonderful reminder of the power if unity in our protest and demonstrations. It was also a great wake up call that the fight against racism isn't as simple as discarding harmful rules, and it is a fight we must continue.
After the production they provided pamphlets with information on everyones personal rights, and a copy of Twelve Angry Men: True Stories of Being a Black Man in America. Art is a wonderful tool to discuss social issues and raise awareness.
