(3 points) Attending Honors Program events (lectures, workshops, social gatherings): 3 points
Attending the Black August event regarding the legacy of Angela Davis and political prisoners, while hearing from Spelman professors lived and studied experiences was an amazing start to my semester, and a good reminder of the continued work that must be done.
The event had more attendees than anticipated, leading to a late start as a new location was found. Once that was sorted out, the film screening had to be cut short to allow for discussion time. The panel discussion was amazing, and felt more like a conversation between elders and young people than a panel between students and professors. I appreciate the rawness both Dr. Richardson and Dr. McCarty brought. Assata Shakur died several weeks after this event.
Reflecting on Davis's legacy has invited me to consider Shakur's. I wonder how many more black woman political prisoners have existed throughout history, and how they would like to be remembered. I would like to use my position in the Honors Program to make AUC students more aware of the radical black women who fought for the freedoms we do get to enjoy.
