Example Enrichment Reflections (Photo/Video)
Here you'll find example reflections that include both photos and text captions from 2024, which in sum amounted to a Gold Level Distinction for one academic year. Students are highly encouraged to include *both a visual element and an accompanying well-written reflection* in order to receive a Gold Level designation for a Reflection Post.

Uncle Nearest Distillery Visit – Class of 2029
ReplyDeleteVisiting the Uncle Nearest Distillery with the Spelman Honors Program was an unforgettable experience that combined history, beauty, and personal reflection. Learning about Uncle Nearest, the first known African American master distiller whose skills were essential in shaping Tennessee whiskey, reminded me of how often Black contributions are overlooked in history and how powerful it is when those stories are reclaimed. As a photography and art history double major, this resonated deeply with me because both of my fields are about preserving narratives, honoring legacies, and making sure important stories are not erased. The breathtaking scenery of rolling hills, open skies, and lush greenery added another layer of meaning for me, inspiring me to imagine how I might one day use my art to highlight Black history and culture in ways that are both beautiful and lasting. Being in that space gave me a sense of calm and motivation, and as a first-year student I left feeling grateful to be at an institution like Spelman that values history, creativity, and truth.
